Lava Bed National Monument, Calif. Virtual Reality ( VR) Panoramas The caves shown below do not have installed lights. It's completely black inside, so if you decide to visit be sure to bring flashlights. I used a different lighting technique for the Valentine Cave compared to the Skull Cave. Both methods worked, but each yielded a little different result.
These VR Panos will play great even on slower computers if you have the latest version of Flash. Get Flash Ver. 10 here for free. http://get.adobe.com/flashpl
Skull Cave Taken from the park service brochure Skull Cave: When E. L. Hopkins discovered this cave he found two human skeletons, bones of antelope and mountain goats, and bighorn skulls for which he named the cave. It is a remnant of two large lava tubes, one on top of the other. The entrance is the largest in the monument. The lower level has an ice floor year round.
the bottom level. It's hard to tell the size of this cave, but it's very large.
Be sure to check out the ceiling on this lower level!
Fleener Chimneys and Lava Flow This spatter cone was created by globs of molten lava piling on top of each other. A hole is left in the center giving it a chimney-like effect. The chimneys are the source of the tremendous aa flow called The Devil's Homestead. The eruption occurred between 2,000 and 8,000 years ago.
